    FLOODING UPDATE

    Laois County Council wish to advise that due to the recent heavy rainfall a substantial number of regional and local roads remain impassable including the N80.  

    Laois County Council road crews have been distributing sand bags throughout the day and erecting diversion/road closure signage as necessary.  Motorists are urged to exercise caution on all roads, to observe road closure signs, drive appropriately and not attempt to drive through flooded areas.  The Roads Management response will continue again in the morning following first light.  Laois County Council has also assisted families who have been affected by the flooding by providing refreshments, shelter and securing emergency accommodation.

    Emergency crews will remain in attendance and Laois County Council will continue to monitor flood level in the County.

    Laois County Council would like to acknowledge the assistance provided by other local authorities which will allow rotation of emergency response crews and the provision of an emergency response capacity throughout the night.  The Council would also like to thank the public for their on-going co-operation.

    Flooding – Portarlington

    Laois County Council wish to advise residents in the Portarlington area that levels in the River Barrow are high as a result of the recent heavy rainfall and are expected to rise further over the next six hours.  Residents in areas vulnerable to flooding should take sensible precautions.

    Roads crews, Civil Defence crews and Fire Service crews are in attendance.  Members of the public are requested to observe road closure signs, drive appropriately and not attempt to drive through flooded areas.

    Flood & Severe Weather Warning

    Laois County Council wish to advise that due to the recent heavy rainfall the N80 is now closed as is many of the adjoining local roads including Ballyfin to Mountmellick Road, Irishtown, Wolfe Tone Street, Manor Lane are all impassible.

    Currently 21 families in Mountmellick  are being evacuated from their homes as a result of the flooding.    Extreme caution to be taken in the Mountmellick area and vehicular traffic should avoid the town where possible.

    Caution is advised in the Clonaslee area. Alternative routes to be taken if possible.

  • Notice of Flooding & Temporary Road Closures

    PRESS RELEASE AT 11.40 am-  23rd NOVEMBER 2017 – LAOIS COUNTY COUNCIL

    Laois County Council wishes to advise that due to the recent heavy rainfall a substantial number of regional and local roads continue to remain impassable including the N80.  Traffic from Tullamore travelling to Portlaoise should travel via Portarlington.

    Roads within the Mountmellick area which remain impassable include:

    1. Ballyfin to Mountmellick,
    2. Derrycloney to Ballyfin,
    3. Manor Lane,
    4. Mountmellick to Portarlington,
    5. Acragar
    6. Irishtown

    35 families were evacuated by the Council and hotel accommodation provided for those who required same. A Humanitarian Aid Centre has been set up at the Community Centre at Wolfe Tone Court staffed by Laois County Council and the Department of Social Protection.

    Fire crews from Westmeath, Longford, and Offaly provided assistance overnight. These have now been replaced again by Laois Fire Crews. Army personnel are also providing assistance. Laois Fire Services, Civil Defence and Road Crews remain in response mode.

    Motorists are urged to continue to exercise caution on all roads, to observe road closure signs, drive appropriately and not attempt to drive through flooded areas and in particular to avoid the Mountmellick area.

    Emergency crews will remain in attendance and Laois County Council will continue to monitor flood levels in the County.

  • Temporary Closure of Pairc an Phobail, Portlaoise

    Due to excessive flooding after heavy rainfall overnight and this morning, Pairc an Phobail is closed.

  • Recent Heavy Rainfall

    County Laois and in particular North County Laois has experienced an extreme heavy rainfall event over the last 6 hours.

    This has resulted in flooding in many areas, in particular across the North of the County.

    Our road maintenance crews have been mobilised since 6 a.m. along with 4 fire service crews to attend to these flooding issues.  We have mobilised our Civil Defence personnel and other road crews are being diverted to the North Laois area to help deal with the situation.

    There are many areas of surface water on our roads and driver’s are advised to drive with extreme caution.

    Anyone requiring emergency services should dial 999.

  • Connect 2 Laois Food Trail

    On Thursday November 16th a group of Food Producers and Food Service Providers that are part of the Connect 2 Laois for Food programme visited Ballykilcavan Brewing Company, The Merry Mill, Strabally Fayre and G’s Jams where great hospitality was experienced and plenty of knowledge and experiences was shared.
