    Laois Crisis Management Team : Latest Update (20:40)

    Laois County Council, An Garda Siochana and HSE Crisis Management Team wish to strongly advise that all members of the public should remain indoors and any unnecessary travel should be avoided.

    Fire crews and Garda units have assessed the condition of the priority routes in the county and the majority are deemed passable with care at this time.  This includes the M7, N80, N78, N77, R445, R427, R430 (Killeshin to Mountrath), R433, R435, R434, R639, R427 (Stradbally to Cashel), R440, R422, R420, R419, R423 (Mountmellick to Portarlington), R426 (Swan to Portlaoise via Timahoe), R425 (Cashel to Sheffield Cross).  The regional routes between Mountmellick and Ballyfin (R423) and the R427 at Vicarstown remains blocked at this time.  This is subject to change through the night.

    Council road crews will be mobilised from first light tomorrow to remove debris and to clear any routes that remain blocked.  Until that time the Crisis Management Team are advising that all unnecessary travel should be avoided as conditions are still hazardous.

    Laois County Council, An Garda Siochana and HSE Crisis Management Team wish to strongly advise that all members of the public should remain indoors.  Under no circumstances should anybody leave their property or travel on the roads.

    There are currently 93 reported incidences, with 34 roads blocked in Co. Laois and fallen trees have been reported multiple locations. 

    Fire crews and Garda units have been mobilised to assess the condition of the priority routes in the county.  Council road crews will be mobilised from first light tomorrow to remove debris and to clear priority routes.

    There are currently 31 roads blocked in Co. Laois and fallen trees have been reported in 40 separate locations. Portarlington Fire Service has responded to a road traffic collision at Monasterevin where a tree has fallen on a car, one person has been removed to Portlaoise General Hospital.

    Laois County Council and An Garda Siochana Crisis Management Team wish to inform the public of the following road closures:

    • Mountmellick to Clonaslee
    • Ballybrittas to Vicarstown
    • Mountmellick to Portarlington (at Garryhinch)
    • Rathdowney to Ballacolla (Middlemount Rathdowney)
    • Spink to Swan (Heydons Pub)
    • Mountain View, Portlaoise

    The Team also wish to report the following serious incidents:

    • Fallen tree on car at Marybourough Village (no person injured)
    • Roof has blown off shed in Ballyfin
    • Tree down on utility wires at Derrycloney Bridge and Drinagh, Mountmellic

    Power Outages have been reported at Abbeyleix, Mountmellick, Clonaslee, Cullohill, Kilcavan, Killenard

    Increased wind speeds have been experienced than what was originally forecast.  All members of the public are advised to remain indoors and not to venture outdoors under any circumstances.

    Laois County Council and An Garda Siochana Crisis Management Team met at 11.30.am and wish to confirm the following:

    Wind speeds of over 130km/hr are anticipated from 1300 Hrs until early on Tuesday morning

    Advice has issued to all businesses to close and send their workers home.

    Large Scale power outages are anticipated.NO unnecessary travel should be taken.

    All our Emergency Services are on standby.

    All Council buildings including County Hall & Libraries are closed to the public today, 16th October 2017 due to the adverse weather conditions.

    Severe Weather Warning : Code Level Red

    Ex-Hurricane Ophelia is forecast to track directly over Ireland during daytime Monday. Violent and destructive gusts are forecast with all areas at risk and in particular the southwest and south in the morning, and eastern counties in the afternoon. Also heavy rain and storm surges along some coasts will result in flooding.

    There is potential risk to lives.

  • Weather Warning : Code Level RED – IMPORTANT UPDATE

    Met Eireann has issued a Code Orange Weather warning for County Laois as follows:

    Weather Warning : Code Level RED

    Hurricane Ophelia is expected to transition to a post tropical storm as it approaches our shores on Monday.  Mean wind speeds between 65 and 80 km/h with gusts between 110 and 130km/h are expected.  The winds have potential to cause structural damage and disruption, with dangerous marine conditions due to high seas and potential flooding.

    (Current forecasts predict, in the South and along the East coast, wind values are likely to be in the high end of the orange scale but all parts of the country will be at risk).

    In preparation for the arrival of the storm Laois County Council’s Extreme Weather Local Coordination group met earlier today and have put our emergency crews on standby.

    Laois County Council advises as follows:

    • All unnecessary travel should be avoided on Monday while the storm is passing. 
    • Very strong winds are predicted making driving conditions hazardous, especially for the more vulnerable road users, e.g., cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclist and high sided vehicles. Road users should pay particular attention to the risk posed by fallen trees and flying debris. 
    • Given anticipated weather conditions, tomorrow should be no bike day.
    • Power outages are likely to occur in certain parts of the country, with contingency planning activated by the ESB.  The ESB is advising the public to stay away from fallen cables that may have broken due to the high winds. ESB Emergency Services can be contacted at 1850 372 999
    • Bus Éireann’s schools transport services will not be operating in counties covered by Red level warnings. Because of the duty of care owed to children and to avoid the risk arising from travelling, the Department of Education and schools is instructing all schools to act on the Departments advice. Crèches and Montessori facilities should also remain closed tomorrow. 
    • People are asked to check in on isolated and vulnerable neighbours today in advance of the oncoming severe weather conditions and again after the worst of the event has passed. 
    • People are advised to remain indoors at all time

    Laois County Council’s Severe Weather Co-ordination Centre will be operational from approximately 12 Noon on Monday 16th October 2017 and all incidents should be reported to the Severe Weather Hotline -LoCall 1890 837 273.

    ROAD CLOSED to public traffic for 1 Day to allow for road recycling works. Access for residents will be accommodated where possible. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted.
