  • Green Flag Award for Parks in Co Laois

    Success for two public Parks in Co Laois!

    On Thursday 19th July Minister of State for Housing and Urban Renewal – Damien English presented Green Flag Awards to:
    Páirc an phobail Portlaoise ( for the 3rd year in a row)
    Peoples Park Portarlington (their 1st year entry into the Green Flag Award for Parks Scheme)

    The Green Flag Award is an internationally recognised Award.

    Minister English commented that “the Green Flag Awards encourage the provision of good quality public parks and green spaces that are managed in environmentally sustainable ways. The act of planning, creating, and using a public utility, be it a community garden, park or open space, brings people, communities and neighbours together. It is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle to have access to, and to be able to enjoy, outdoor amenities particularly those which are so well tended and maintained”.

    PRESS RELEASE – Contract signing for Portlaoise Southern Circular Route

    The Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council, Councillor John King and the Chief Executive of Laois County Council, Mr. John Mulholland signed the Contract for the Portlaoise Southern Circular Road Extension this morning in Áras an Chontae, Portlaoise, Co. Laois in the presence of the Cathaoirleach of Portlaoise Municipal District, Cllr. Catherine Fitzgerald.

    The successful tenderer is Total Highway Maintenance Ltd., Killaree, Three Castles, Co. Kilkenny.

    The development will comprise of the:
    • Construction of 550m of new single carriageway road between the R426 Timahoe and N77 Abbeyleix Roads;
    • Extension of the existing link road, currently terminating close to the Aldi Supermarket entrance, to continue to a new roundabout at the junction of this extended link road with the new Portlaoise Southern Circular Road;
    • Improvement works to the existing roundabout on the R426 Timahoe Road with the Portlaoise Southern Circular Road and realignment of the R426 Timahoe Road with the construction of a new roundabout at the entrance to the People’s Park;
