  • PRESS RELEASE AT 15.50pm – 28th FEBRUARY 2018

    Laois County Council’s Severe Weather Crisis Management Team met today at 10.30am and 14.30pm. The meeting was attended by An Garda Siochana, HSE, Midlink Motorway Services and all Laois County Council affected services such as Roads, Water Services, Housing, PPN, Fire Services and Civil Defence.
    There is a current Orange status warning for County Laois but weather conditions are anticipated to get considerably worse, and by 4pm tomorrow a Red status warning will be in effect.

    The following actions were agreed at the meeting.
    The Severe Weather Coordination Centre has been established in Laois County Council with representatives from Laois County Council, An Garda Siochana and Health Services Executive basing their response teams in Aras an Chontae.
    Please be advised if you require the assistance of the emergency services please dial 999. The local number for the Severe Weather Communication Centre is 1890837273. Emergency shelter is available on request.

    At present all our national roads and motorway routes remain open, however motorists should exercise caution. Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures has made conditions on all other routes hazardous.
    The following road is closed, R440 from the Cattle Mart on Rushin Road , Mountrath to Kinnitty Village (exact location available from Offaly County until further notice.

    The R430 from Graiguecullen to Abbeyleix is extremely hazardous. Motorists are strongly advised to use alternative routes.

    Please also check on the elderly and isolated neighbours and friends and ensure they have adequate stocks of food and fuel.

  • PRESS RELEASE AT 07.30HRS – 28th FEBRUARY 2018

    Laois has experienced much heavier snow than expected. Up to 10 inches of snow is reported to have fallen in parts of the County.

    We have been salting and ploughing since 3am and have focused on Priority 1 routes including N77, N78, N80, R445 Portlaoise to Portarlington and the old N7 & N8 through the County, salting and ploughing operations are continuing.
    Laois Co Co recommends that extreme caution be exercised when travelling in these extremely hazardous conditions.

    Due to the upcoming Snow-Ice Weather Event, Laois County Council has arranged for supplies of grit and salt to be made available at the following locations:

    Quantities required for individual use:

    A 1kg bag of salt is enough to treat 25 metres of 2 metre wide footpath. Salt usage should be limited to footpaths, driveways etc.
    1 tonne of grit should be enough to cover 3km of roadway assuming 100grammes per square metre.

    Also, due to the predicted severe weather, Laois County Council and Offaly County Council will be closing the R440 from the Cattle Mart on Rushin Road , Mountrath to an area close to Kinnitty Village (exact details available from Offaly County Council) from today 27/2/2018 until further notice.
