Dr. Sean Lyons – Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Informatics

Dr. Sean Lyons is the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Informatics at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS). In his role, he oversees a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, spanning traditional fields such as construction, civil engineering, mechanical, and manufacturing technologies, as well as emerging areas like mechatronics, polymer engineering, computer and software engineering, mobile applications, gaming, virtual reality, design, and animation.
Under Dr. Lyons’ leadership, TUS has experienced significant growth in its apprenticeship programs. Notably, the university has seen a 40% increase in apprentices trained at its Athlone Campus since 2019. Dr. Lyons attributes this surge to the appeal of the “earn and learn” apprenticeship model, which offers students practical experience alongside academic learning.
Dr. Lyons is also actively involved in initiatives aimed at promoting STEM education. He has expressed strong support for programs like the TUS Engineering Olympics, which engage students early on, fostering curiosity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Such initiatives are designed to cultivate a new generation of innovative engineers equipped to tackle future challenges.
In collaboration with Dublin City University (DCU), Dr. Lyons played a pivotal role in launching a joint Bachelor of Education in Technology, Engineering, and Graphics. This unique four-year degree program qualifies students to teach these subjects at the post-primary level, with studies conducted across both TUS and DCU campuses.
Dr. Lyons’ commitment to advancing engineering education and fostering industry partnerships continues to enhance TUS’s reputation as a leader in technological and engineering disciplines.
